Ah, to live in such a dream world...

No, just several zillion different options available for the format.

When saving as a TIFF in PMView, I have the following options:

-------------------------------
Compression - Bilevel Images
No compression
Packbits
LZW
CCITT RLE
CCITT FAX3
Uncompressed mode
2-dimensional encoding
Fill to byte boundary
CCITT FAX4
Uncompressed Mode

Compression - Color Images
No compression
Packbits
LZW

LZW Differencing Predictor
Apply Horizontal Differencing

Strip Size
4k
8k
16k
32k

Photometric
White is Zero
Black is Zero

Byte Ordering
IBM PC
Macintosh
-------------------------------

As you can see, it's a very flexible format; unfortunately, that also
leaves a lot of room for incompatibility with applications and
platforms that don't fully support all the available options.

Your friend and mine,
Matt
