Does anyone know why the file gets larger and smaller this way?

** Yup. Word is performing fast saves when it can. In a fast save,
Word does the digital equivalent of XXXXing out the old stuff
and writing the new stuff in the margins, rather than actually
discarding the old stuff and writing the new stuff in its place.
With each fast save, the file grows. When it feels that the
amount of fast saving has made the file cumbersome, Word does
an actual integration of the changes into the file and the file
size shrinks.

Some people believe that what you gain in speed from fast saves
you lose in speed when Word need to do heavy operations on
fast-saved files (such as printing or big search-and-replace
jobs). Or that the fast-saved file is more prone to problems of
integrity. Such Gates-doubters go to Tools -> Options -> Save and
deselect the "Allow Fast Saves" box.

There are better places than techwr-l to ask about Word.
