Universal File Name Conventions

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me if the Universal File Name Convention in
WFW is invented, created, owned, copyrighted or just used by Microsoft.

The convention I am talking about is where you can substitute the network
drive letters with the server name and share directory name. For example,

h:\work\myproj\project1.doc

can be substituted by

\\net\netlink\work\myproj\project1.doc

where \\net is the name of the server and \netlink is the name of the shared
directory.

Does anyone else use this convention? ie Novell, Banyan, etc

If anyone knows of another mailing list that could be more helpful, please
direct me there.

Thanks in advance,
