Two other reasons for needing artificial tears that I don't think
anyone has mentioned: 1) aging--your eyes dry up; dry eyes is one of
the things that women in their 40's notice as their hormones start
changing. 2) birth control pills can cause your eyes to be dry.

I swear by artificial tears--I have them in my purse, in the car, in
my desk...
