Take a morning -- and take a new look at the technical
communication industry. Instead of looking at technical
communication as a profession (a body of processes and literature),
explore technical communication as an industry. Get an overview of
its size, standard practices, and business relationships to similar
industries. From this view, you can identify potential business
opportunities, assess the effectiveness of technical communication
department against industry standards, chart a business strategy
for your organization, and map out your own career.
Seminar Audience and Objective
This seminar is geared toward technical communicators with two or
more years' experience and who have an interest in the business of
technical communication. Specifically, senior technical
communicators, contractors and consultants, and managers might be
interested in this seminar's objective: recognizing business
opportunities in the technical communication industry.
About the Speaker
Atlanta-based information architect Saul Carliner helps
organizations solve a variety of complex information and
performance problems, such as improving the effectiveness of
marketing materials and developing a strategy for moving policies
and procedures information online. He co-edited the award-winning
Techniques for Technical Communicators (Macmillan,1993), is a
former president of the Atlanta chapter of the National Society for
Performance & Instruction, is international first vice-president of
the Society of Technical Communication, and is author of numerous
articles, including ones published in Home Office Computing,
Technical Communication, Creative Training Techniques, Personal
Systems Developer, and the 1990 Training and Development Yearbook.
Cost and Registration Information
The seminar fee is $40 for STC members and $50 for non-members. The
fee includes all seminar materials, coffee, and lunch.

Time, Place, Directions
This seminar will be held on Saturday morning, starting at 9:00 am,
October 1, 1994, at the Ramada Inn in Woburn, MA and concluding
with lunch approximately three hours later.
The Ramada Inn is located next to Route I-95 (Route 128) in Woburn,
MA. From I-95 take exit 35 toward Woburn and turn right at the
sign for the Inn.
