Well, I think I've heard both, but always thought "bald-faced" was the
original, "bold" the corruption. (If an idiom can be said to be corrupted,
that is.)

My understanding was that it was "Bald-faced" as in "bare-faced"--totally
uncovered, not making any attempt to conceal, so sure of one's ability to
deceive that there's no need to try.
