Their use is just as inconsistent (press, use, move...).
** I never liked telling users to "press" a key, because sometimes holding
it down too long can do bad things.
Nor, being of a peaceable disposition, have I been happy telling users
to "hit" a key.
I released a manual or two telling people to "tap" this or that key,
but I had to stop because the verb is too little used. (Can I start
an underground movement of, say, a hundred technical writers willing
to simultaneously start using "tap" on 1 January 1995?)
