Yes, there is research/references available on this subject.
Two that I know of are:

GUIDELINES FOR DOCUMENT DESGNERS, David Felker et al., American Institutes for
Research, 1055 Thomas Jefferson Street, NW, Washington, DC 20007.

This text was a product of the Document Design Project that was funded by the
National Institute of Education.

DESIGN PRINCIPLES FOR DESKTOP PUBLISHERS, Tom Lichty, Scott, Foresman and
Company, 1989.

Both texts go over typography and choosing a typeface.
