Build up a portfolio of journalistic writing, preferably
on science and technology, as a free lance. Find one or more
subject-matter specialties that you like, and which have
interesting work going on these days, and learn all you can
about them. Cherish and nurture very contact you make, both
in subject matter and in markets. Learn how to use PR contacts
for leads without getting hoodwinked by them. Learn to live
cheaply, and master the art of claiming a tax deduction for
everything short of the dog food Fido burns when you take him
for a walk during a writing project.

Good luck,
Joe
