Bonni Graham suggests that Times Roman and Helvetica have become oh so
common as typefaces for manuals, although they certainly have their place. I
agree with her. When you have a choice, it's nice to experiment. As one
graphic designer lamented to me, "Typography is a lost art."
I have a lovely manual from Adobe that uses Minion and Frutiger. Apple
manuals are identified with Garamond. My PageMaker 5.0 manual uses Helvetica
Neue Condensed--a little more mod than your average fat Helvetica. We're
trying out Stone Sans and Utopia in some of our manuals. (If users only knew
they were looking at Utopia, one imagines they'd feel so much better about
the content.)
