My two desktop systems are both "not-new." One is a 12-core HP workstation, the other an 8-core Dell. Both originally came with XP64 on them. The HP upgraded fine to 7, 8, 8.1 and 10; the Dell had big problems with 7, worked ok with 8 and 8.1 and is fine with 10. Both have had problems with their onboard sound, but newer display cards that had sound on them are working fine.

The primary concern when upgrading is whether drivers are available for the new OS from the system manufacturer. If not, you'll be depending on drivers from chipset manufacturers or on the default W10 drivers (most of which are not bad at all).
