I've used Rick Q's approach when absolutely necessary, otherwise I make
sure to include some obvious reference point in the partial screenshot,
e.g., the *File* tab in an Office appâjust something so that the doc user
(reader) can know *exactly* where the location is that's being referenced.

Sometimes I've included a zoomed out view, with the close-up view offset
and overlaid on top. With this method I've employed "exploding lines" to
indicate exactly which portion of the screen is being magnified in the
overlay. So further make it visually obvious as to what's going on, I
include a thick white L-shaped border between the zoomed out view and the
overlay close-up.
