Gene is correct. I'm sure everyone of us had a couple of jobs that didn't
feel right when we walked through front door, and the more we worked at that
job, the more we were convinced that it wasn't a good fit. The best thing to
do in that case is to move onto a job that is a good fit. Of course, if you
have kids, car payments, mortgages, and so on....there is the fear that you
won't find anything and you'll end up with your kids staring at you from the
dinner table with only a pot of gruel for dinner. Fear can paralyze you from
not doing what you know you need to do. You said you have freelance work
that could tide you through. It may not be a lucrative, but what value is
money if the result is you are destroyed mentally and physically.

The job isn't a good fit. Tell you're manager and your recruiter and leave
it as that..... Both will probably try to talk you into staying. One to save
her job and the other to save his/her fee. There is no reason for you to
stay for them. If there were, you would not be feeling the way you do. You
need to look out for yourself in the case and find something with a better
fit....or go fishing.

No excuse needed if it's early days on the job. Just say the same thing that
employers say when they cut probationary new hires: "not a good fit."
