Re: app vs. application
Hi All,
Does anyone have any advice as to using app vs. application when referring
to mobile apps in technical documentation?
Mobile phones don't have applications and neither do websites; they both have apps.
Actually spelling out application when referring to a mobile app is a bit
cumbersome, but is the use of app less formal and trendy? I'm not quite
sure how fully accepted app is as its own term yet. Also, do you think app
may pose any issues for localization?
I think the distinction between app and application is dependence. As I see it, apps depend on specific systems within an operating system, while applications can stand-alone on a particular operating system.
