app vs. application

Hi All,

Does anyone have any advice as to using app vs. application when referring
to mobile apps in technical documentation?

Actually spelling out application when referring to a mobile app is a bit
cumbersome, but is the use of app less formal and trendy? I'm not quite
sure how fully accepted app is as its own term yet. Also, do you think app
may pose any issues for localization?
