I'm going to assume that what you want is to head every table with a separate line saying something like this;

Table 1. Skunk Parts

If so, what you want is a caption.

Assuming you're talking Word, and assuming you are in 2007:

Select References and then Insert Caption.

In the Caption box that comes up, in the Label dropdown select Table.

Add the text you want in the top box.

Close the box.

You'll have a line reading Table 1. Skunk Parts. It will be in the Caption style. You can mess around with that style if you don't like what you see.

>From then on if you do Insert Caption Word will assume you want a table caption.

If you're in Word 2003 it is the same except you can do Insert -->Caption.

IF YOU HAVE CHANGE TRACKING TURNED ON THE NUMBERS WILL SEEM MESSED UP. They won't look right until you accept or hide the changes.
