Has anyone ever had any luck outright telling an employer, when pushed, that they're speaking to other organizations?

Personally, I can't see such a strategy ever going well, but it'd be interesting to hear if this has ever prompted renegotiations.

Oh, I'm sorry - wasn't trying to nail you to the wall, I was just offering
my perspective based on how I interpreted your post.

Sometimes just saying you have a personal matter to attend to is enough -
and you don't need to say what it is. I just wanted to say that making up a
cover story such as physical therapy or dentist, isn't honest (unless
you're going to squeeze that in on the way home). There's always the option
of making sure your time is made up - if your leaving an hour early, you
could come in early or eat lunch while working. That way, nobody can accuse
you of using company time to conduct your job search. I've often found
people are willing to interview after hours as well - they know you're
working and will appreciate that you're doing this on your own time.

And I guess if you can't be honest when people ask about the change in
behaviour, be vague :)

Oh, God, Suzette has nailed me to the wall. Well, I hadn't thought that
far, but I guess I was thinking of mostly scheduling things very early or
very late, and taking personal time. It's just that, if you change your
pattern of b edhavior, which is what I will be doing, I don't want to be
caught dumbstruck if someone innocently asks me what's up. I do feel the
need of a story. Doughty, REALLY clutching his pearls now

And I wonder if I need to point out that by asking that question here,
which has an rssfeed to some websites, you've just kind of announced that
you're willing to be deceptive. That isn't (IMO) a good start to a new job
search.

I'm about to start jobhunting in earnest. If there's any interest, I will
have to make some longer phone calls, have some Skype interviews, and
eventually make actual physical visits for interviews, so I will need to
get out of the office for a few hours now and then.
