We don't charge if a potential customer wants to see the print and/or online documentation before buying. Our software is for a very small, specialized market (neuroscientists and stereologists). Our software (with associated hardware) can cost between $25000 and $200000, so the $13 it costs us to print a manual is tiny compared to the other costs. We also will do custom programming for a customer (and the change or feature then becomes part of the regular software) and include documentation on that. We will also do a pilot study for them using a subsidiary of our company--say, an optical fractionator study and charge them for it.
