At the computer store where I bought it (and where the warranty is long
outdated), the salesman said that this is the "dirty little secret" of
laptops and that lots of them have this problem. Only IBMs and Apples have
solved the problem (the Macs by splitting the cable into four, with four
magnetic connectors)."

Hi Nancy,

I've used Gateway laptops since 2000 and I used to sell Mac, HP, Toshiba,
Acer, and Compaq laptops at the computer store I managed in the 1990s in
Fairbanks, AK. I've seen a few older models that had power connector
problems, but I've never experienced it myself. I think the salesman was
trying to make a sale more than helping you with your problem. John is
right, check out a reputable repair shop and see what they can do to help
you. If they say it's not fixable, then start looking for a replacement, but
I think you might find the fix is far cheaper than the replacement.
