Hi Nancy
I've been experiencing a similar issue with my two year old Dell laptop.
About half the time, when I connect it, the PC reports it can't
determine the power type and thus won't charge the battery as a result.
When I was googling the issue, it seemed to be quite common. At least
among Dells.
I'm sure it didn't help matters any that my little Pekingese jumped off
the couch and became tangled in the power cable, pulling the laptop over
the edge onto the floor. Probably put a bit of extra strain on the
connection. ;)
Cheers... Rick :)

Only IBMs and Apples have solved the problem (the Macs by splitting the cable into four, with four magnetic connectors).
