I think it unlikely that employers and recruiters are
deliberately conspiring to lie about writer compensation
when they report their figures to the federal government.

More likely, the lower figures that come from BLS are the
result of writers with long experience being lumped into
averages with the flood of dot.com era newbies who joined
the field in the late 90's when anyone who knew how to use
MS Word could get $50 an hour but got demoted to DTP
temps making $15 an hour after the bubble burst and
employers went back to expecting technical writers to
know how to be technical.
