RE: Word's "Master Document" feature

Sometimes master documents are handy for global editing and for final
production purposes. In either case, you should make a copy of your
actual files and build the master document from the copy. Don't expect
to be actually make important edits in the master document or
subdocuments, just use the master as a way to handle the document as if
it were one file.

The only thing I've ever missed from separate documents is an automatic
way to update the page and figure numbers across files (and thus avoid
chapter number prefixing), the ability to do truly global searches, and
the ability to make cross-references between documents.

You can easily create a global TOC and Index by using RD fields.

You can cross-reference between documents if you bookmark the target and
use an IncludeText field for the reference.

You might Google or otherwise investigate the Tech Tav templates, which
overcome many of these problems fairly painlessly.

There are also any number of macros and third-party tools to compensate
for these shortcomings in Word.
