The STC really missed the boat as far as taking ownership of the field of
information on our behalf. By not stepping forward and saying "information
online is within our purview" (until much later), it allowed so-called web
designers and developers to be the ones to put content online. Hence a lot
of unusable content and confusing web copy. Even now, clients look at the
copy on their websites as secondary to the design. We've all seen websites
that looked beautiful but were useless to end users.
If people knew that they should get a good web content professional (i.e.,
technical writer) first, who would then work with the designer and developer
to produce the site, we'd have a lot more work and web surfing wouldn't be
quite as painful. :-)
