TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
On the certification front I see two benefits (for different groups):
1 At the lower end (newbie/little experience) it could be used by
somebody to show that they have the 'basics' - basically people who, as
yet, don't have the experience/portfolio to show they can do the job.
2 At the higher end (experienced writers) I'd see specialist
modules (basic stuff already there) that related to specific
jobs/industries etc - project management, QA, Usability, Telecomms etc.
I'd guess John is coming from point (2) and that's probably what would
be of interest to most on this list. But, if in place, new people to the
profession would have a 'path' from newbie onwards. I don't see it as
the be all and end all. If I was recruiting a new writer it would be
just one factor in the decision process.
