Also, as previously posted, I have never, EVER, asked an
interviewer "Can I have the job?" That, to me, is just
too forward.

Same here - to me, there's a difference between "show
enthusiasm for the job" (which is perhaps what all the advice
gurus actually mean by this?) and "ask for the job like a
cookie".
What I *have* said, instead (when it was true), was something
like "I've enjoyed meeting everybody, and this seems like a
great place to work. I'd definitely like to join your team!
When do you expect to make a decision?" (Of course, this
is after the long discussion of just how perfect the team
and I are for each other ;) )

You both say you wouldn't ask for the job, then turn around and ask for the
job. "I'd like to join your team," is just a different way of telling the
interviewer that you want to work there...you want the job. Somewhere in
this thread, someone said "ask for the job," and it was taken literally.
When it was mentioned that you should ask for the job, the inference was
that you should let the interviewer(s) know that you are highly interested
and would like the job before you walk out. You gave a example of what we
were all talking about in the paragraph after you referred to asking "for
the job like a cookie."
It's sales and marketing. Marketing got the interview and sales gets you
the job. First lesson you learn in sales is "ask for the sale" without
"asking for the sale."
My 2 cents.
