1. What students can learn now to help them prepare?
Grammar, vocabulary, spelling. Write, write, write.
Writing that gets critiqued by a good writer or editor
is an excellent way to learn. School newspaper; work
as a stringer for a local paper; document software for
SourceForge or some other freeware site. Be a nitpicker
who proofreads all written material and gets visibly
distressed by "10 ITEMS OR LESS" or "LOW PRICES EVERYDAY"
at the supermarket. Study and learn Latin.

2. What colleges are good to attend for this type of work?
Any college that offers journalism and for which the J-101
course consists mostly of exercises in writing. The 10-minute
story exercise is the best way to prepare for a writing
career. Indeed, it'll prepare any serious student for taking
essay tests in *any* subject, too. I didn't get to take a
J course, but I wish that I had, even though I grew up in
a newspaper family.

3. What salary range could they expect?
Less than zero to slightly more than adequate. It is not a
field in which to get rich, especially now that there is
competition from abroad.
