OTOH, if the person saying, "I want to customize this" is your paying
customer, or a large number of your paying customers, you'd find a
way to make it possible for them to customize their apples.exe UI
without having to muck about with your source code (which they
probably don't want to do anyway).  The number of software apps
that allow users to drag their toolbars around, rearrange their
menus or create their own personal toolbars and menus by means
of macors is a good indication of how often that has occurred in the
software world.  The OP's readers' (both the internal salespeople
and the customer end users), don't see the docs that are packaged
with the products, or distributed pre-purchase, as "source code,"
and they probably couldn't care less about the FrameMaker, Word
or other files that the docs are made from; they want to customize
the end result.  The challenge here is to figure out how to give them
something approximating what they're asking for without compromising
the base documents *and* to ensure that what they add can be reviewed
to prevent disastrous errors from going out.  Finding a way to get back
whatever good stuff they might add that should become part of the base
documents would be a nice dividend as well.
