As a tech pubs manager for the past 14 years or so, I have only
reported to one higher up in all that time who had a publications
background (unfortunately, this individual wasn't a very good
manager, so the experience was not good, but not for the reasons
you're asking about). Most managers who have no hands-on
publications experience don't care much about being trained or
otherwise informed about publications; they just want to know
whether the docs are going to be completed in time to meet the
schedule and how much it's going to cost. If you're lucky, your
manager will also want to know what he/she can do to remove
obstacles that may be impeding your ability to meet schedule
and cost and even to improve their quality and will have the
management experience and ability to do it.

If your non-publications-experienced manager is *also* non-management-experienced, beware (see first sentence
above).

Fellow Whirlers,

As an informal poll, I'm curious how many employees (as opposed to contractors and self-employed) have/had supervisors with no tech comm background? How do you feel about this? What advantages and disadvantages does this have? How do you inform and 'train' supervisors without confusing or overwhelming them? What if that supervisor also lacks a management background?

Thanks for participating! Feel free to reply off-list.
