I'm currently evaluating PLM systems for doc control and am going through Arena Solutions documentation to eval the free demo product. They have two guides in PDF format (quick start, user manual) that are excellent models for a first pass at writing user documentation for a new product or custom in-house solution. You can download them for free from the trial version.
