This has been covered by several of us in the last couple of days, but what the heck, I don't mind saying it again:

PageMaker is going away. It is obsolete, unmaintainable software. InDesign is modern code that Adobe is committed to expanding going forward. If PageMaker 7 turns out not to run under the next Windows operating system you get (currently codenamed Longhorn), Adobe won't help you. PageMaker works fine now, and you can continue updating your material with it. But if you are building new documents and want to maintain them into the future, you should consider InDesign. You can also import your PM pubs into it, apparently pretty smoothly.

As for tables, you can either design them for conventional typesetting in tabbed paragraph styles or you can export EPS tables from Word, Excel, etc., and place them as graphics. Don't use Adobe Table if you want to retain your hair and your sanity.
