A while ago someone recommended "Garner's Modern American Usage" by
Bryan Garner. I find this to be an indispensable tool for the
TECHNICAL writer (i.e. me, the non-English major). I even signed up
for his tip of the day at:

Obviously, if you are not writing for the American market, not as useful. :-)
