If it means anything, I was brought into a gig when a well-publicised
virus crashed their system (the way I hear it, the Network
Administrator was pulling out server powerplugs as fast as he could
grab them to stop the replication of the virus) and they realized
that their documentation hadn't been updated from when it was
originally installed several years prior. The request for havng the
system documented came from the CIO, who, BTW, also came in because
of the crash.

A catastrophe can be the impetus for documentation.
