When someone asks for advice, it is always best to be prepared to
*receive* advice even if it may not be what you expect.

I think there is a considerable consensus around one simple strategy:

When you're the lone writer, just do the docs as well as you can
within the time alotted. Don't talk about it, don't create drama,
don't expect people to do the management and editing job they are not
prepared for. As Nike says: "Just do it."

Then, let the work speak for itself.

I have *never* seen negative reactions to docs that were done well and
on time and budget. Positive comments that come from the user
community become testimony to the improved docs well beyond the
original responses from the existing management.

You don't want them to say "What we have is good enough?" Then don't
ask. Simple.
