I just tried this in Windows, and it does work, and gives you the
prettier version of the mu character.

Just tried this too In Windows. You can simply type lowercase 'm' in
the Symbol font and get the mu symbol. Incidentally, Alt+0109 in a
normal font is the lowercase 'm'. So the Alt+0109 is actually the long
way to do it...
