When I've had to proof my own stuff for something really
important, I've tried the technique of reading backwards.
Start on the last page. Read backwards, not just page
by page, but each sentence, each word.
word. each sentence, each but page, by ... and so forth
This disconcerting presentation of the material usually
flushes out a few more bugs. It certainly prevents one
from skimming over all the stuff one believes is already
perfect.
Occasionally an SME will turn out to be a frustrated but
very good editor, causing me to ask, "Did you just check
the grammar, or did you look for technical errrors, too?"
