At one time in distant and receding history those tags
read, "DO NOT REMOVE THIS TAG UNDER PENALTY OF THE LAW."
There was nothing about consumers on them at all. It
was clear to most folks that a midnight knock on the door
from the sheriff was not in store for them if they ripped
off that tag. But for a few with overactive imaginations
or guilty consciences, like me at maybe the age of eight,
the tag stirred up feelings of terror and dread, over what
might happen if one tore it off. Sing-Sing for life,
or maybe water torture. Or having to eat spinach.
