TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
If you're an independent 1099-type writer with a solid technical background,
the contracting market has been fairly decent all through the recent economic
slump, though the rates have naturally fallen from what they were at the height
of the boom. W2 temp writer positions have been coming up of late, as many
companies need some writing done but are still not hiring direct, and the rates
for those can range anywhere from decent down to absurdly low. Unfortunately,
most of the recruiter/agencies carrying W2 work seem to me to tend toward the
latter.
