The contracting outlook is getting a lot better, especially in the
last month or so (yes, even over the holidays, which was really
surprising). I can't speak of recruiters because I generally tend to
get work on my own through networking contacts. I have worked with
Tim Carl (http://www.thecarlgroup.com) who was mentioned in a previous
post, although only as an agency for work I've found myself. He's
very professional and I can recommend him wholeheartedly in every
respect.

Having my resume on the web (on my own site) has been by far the most
frequent way I get new work. Company recruiters look for writers with
google before they post job ads.

Good luck.

Laura
