Good point! Actually, it isn't distinguishing between the terms doesn't seem
to be the issue. In my observation, the issue seems to be how one acts on
the distinctions. I've observed varying levels of intensity in people which
give misleading communication cues to our audiences.
Less intense people appear passive (or not assertive), while more intense
people who mean to be merely assertive appear aggressive. I think we have to
understand our individual styles and either up the levels in intensity or
lower them, depending.
None of this is easy!
