So do you have any practical suggestions for how to combat shyness?

(very long!)
Some people are shy and timid by nature but they do not let
their tendency toward shyness rule their lives or get in the
way of what they need to accomplish. Shyness is a personality trait that
can be worked on and virtually eliminated given time and effort.
How do I know? Because I was a white-knuckle case all the way through
high school and college. I could not stand up in
front of class to give a report or even write something on the board
without shaking and coming nearly to tears. It wasn't until I was
offered a job as a software trainer that it
became important to me to eliminate shyness from my inventory of
personality traits, and if you've ever seen me speak at a conference,
you'll know how well I succeeded.
Don't use shyness as an excuse. Get out there and get the job done.
My two cents.
