My father, although in a different industry, was laid off January 2003. They hired him back as a consultant, and paid him double. So, his hypothetical salary was $10/hour, and when he was hired back as a consultant he was earning $20/hour. But he did put up with whims; for example, we won't need you tomorrow, but we will the next day.

Years ago my fiancee did what Gordon suggests, to the letter: overpriced,

Speaking of consulting, I'm actually doing a consulting gig in the same
building complex as the company that just laid me off. Small world, eh?
