Why do you think that single sourcing should mean that your online
docs must look like your hardcopy docs?
This is not at all necessary, as it happens. There are various XML
technologies, for instance, that make this fairly routine once they
are set up properly.
I don't know what the original poster meant, but XML only takes care of formatting. Structure and the length of paragraphs could still be a problem.
