where do white papers fit in technical communication?

TECHWR-Lers,

I am studying the how the genre of "white papers" fits within the field of
technical communication, and I would appreciate your participation in a
brief survey.

Previous discussions about white papers on TECHWR-L show that we do not
yet have a clear view of how white papers fit within the scope of tech
comm, and our books and journals scarcely mention them. Whether you have a
lot of experience with white papers or a little, your input will be
valuable.

I will gladly share the survey results with the tech comm community
through TECHWR-L and related publications.
