Re: Comparing the MS Word normal style on two computers?
When you select Tools|Templates and Add-Ins, is the "Automatically Update
Document Styles" check box selected? It should *never* be.
No, I don't believe THIS option has anything to do with the problem being described. THIS option is a VERY USEFUL TOOL. When selected, it says "always make sure the document follows the latest standards set in the template I've gone to the trouble of attaching to this document."
The option that causes problems sounds very similar, but it's in a different place, and it does something else altogether. If you choose Format, Style, then click the Modify button in the Style dialog box, you see the Modify Style dialog box. There's a checkbox there called Automatically Update, and THAT's the option that can wreak havoc with your document.
When selected, THAT option says "any time I apply any paragraph-level formatting to a paragraph with this style name, apply the same change to every paragraph in the document that is assigned the same style name." That's probably not what you want.
By the way, the adjacent checkbox called Add To Template is also capable of causing undesirable results. When you create or edit a style, this option adds that style to the template attached to this document. The next time someone opens any other document attached to the same template, they'll have that new style available there, too. Like most tools, this can be a good thing in the right hands, but it can also cause style proliferation from which recover is tedious.
