Adobe and Jasc Software (makers of Paint Shop Pro, where this currency
restriction also applies) are taking this issue too far. They have no
doubt been pressured by the American government to take this step, but
it's pretty shameful. This is classic digital rights thuggery: Because a
service of product might be used for illegal purposes, we must restricts
its legal uses as well.
They are caught in a quandary. (sheesh I hate defending certain companies) If they do not remove the restriction they are subject to prosecution for aiding and abetting counterfeiting.
A friend on mine who manages some local hot spots, just today told me that several counterfeit 20s, (the new ones,) had been passed at one of his joints. It seems they had been photocopied with a high quality laser on a bleached one dollar bills. Just picture this scene, a busy dimly lit bar, the bartender pouring as fast as he can, taking the twenty and giving change without looking too carefully because the bills felt right and he had trouble keeping up with the crowd. Yes the technology is that good. I have great reservations about censorship, but at what point should it apply. I also think further discussions of this topic should be taken off line.
