Solveig Haugland suggests,

Re fixing issues with editing and tracking changes in a document --
OpenOffice.org Writer has the same feature tracking abilities and works between
OpenOffice.org and Word. Download and use for free at www.openoffice.org Try
using OOo Writer, then save in MS Word format, and give that file to the client.
I've done this while editing authors who had Word (not sure which version) and it
worked great.

I'm an OpenOffice.org enthusiast, too, but I would not recommend Solveig's technique for complex documents, at least not if you want to be sure to retain all the Word features (STYLEREF fields come to mind, but there are others). On relatively simple documents, it may work okay.

I must try it again with the newly-released OOo version 1.1, which has improved MSOffice-OOo compatibility immensely, but I doubt all the incompatibilities have been resolved.
