When entering these design squabbles, it's best to
have some kind of REASON for your proposed designs
with FACTS backing them up. So, having the CMS, MS
Manual of Style, Sun Style Guide, etc. on your side
AND a valid and well-reasoned argument for what you
want to do is critical. That well-reasoned valid
argument should have your readers in mind.

It's not about what looks good, it's about how usable
it is. If it's usable, chances are it'll also look
good.

And, on a personal note, I hate books with all-cap
headings and text strings. It's not a very readable
means of presenting images and commands too heavy a
presence on the page (your eyes are drawn to those
elements, sometimes distractingly so).
