For me, it depends on what type of music. I generally try to listen to instrumental styles of music (instr. rock, techno/house/trance, classical, jazz, lounge, you name it).

If I am listening to something with lyrics, I have to keep the volume a bit lower so that the lyrics aren't as much of a distraction.
