I think it's partially in what you're accustomed to, and partially in how
well you're able to compartmentalize. I worked from home for so long that I
grew used to working in an absolutely non-sterile, non-silent atmosphere. At
work, whether I'm listening to music or news, I usually do so with a single
ear-bud, so that my "free" ear is available for hearing the office buzz.

In the office-with-a-door-and-a-window that I currently share with the other
writer here, we both plug into NPR (although she uses full headphones and I
use a single ear-bud).

do it while writing? When I was doing dummy-HTML-copy/paste work I could 
listen to music all day and it didn't interfere. Now that I'm writing 
I can't do that. I find myself typing the song's lyrics in the manual!
