A book will not tell you how programming works, it will only help you with a language. Moreover you will not be able to get started if you do not learn how to debug. And believe me, a stupid bug that will take an experience programmer 2 seconds to solve, could take you days. The language you learn has minimal importance, the logic behing the code is what counts. Take a basic programming class, then an object oriented programming class. I suggest java or C++ as they are the most widely used.
It will not make you a programmer, but it will enable you to read code and understand what is going on.
